I’ve been slacking a bit on posting since the holidays — I hope you’ll forgive me when I tell you it’s because I’ve been working like mad to finish a book of short stories that will be released very soon!
These are strange, dreamlike, slipstreamy, magical realist type stories. (no surprise there). And yes, there will be freebies for subscribers to The Metaphysical Circus.
I thought about hiring someone else to design my cover, but as I was researching book covers to see what style I liked and get ideas to give the designer… oops, I ended up putting together a collage I loved.
These designs are just mock-ups, so the quality of the images here is low. Once I’ve settled on the the design I like I’ll go back, buy the images I need and construct a high resolution collage. (In case you can’t see from this size image what is in front of the handbag, they are screws.)
Please release your inner designer and let me know which one you like best. Also feel free to make suggestions for improvements or changes… colors, fonts, sizes, anything.
Thanks. You’re the best!

Wow, how cool. I’m turning to you for the design of my book too! I really like the first one–the way the art/color fills the space. The sky is more intense as well. I like the red lettering on the third, but the image seems so tamed by comparison. Nice work. It does remind me of the fairy handbag from Kelly link’s stories, and also my story about the mother with a hundred purses. : )
Thanks Nathan, I am leaning toward the first one too, for the same reasons, but I am keeping an open mind for now. I thought of Link’s story, too, of course. I don’t think I’ve seen your handbag story…? Mine is called The Evolution of Reptilian Handbags, a title I’m rather pleased with. It’s the final story in the collection.
i like 2 the best, however, design pointers… there is a zone of thirds for nice design..the red purse dead center breaks this rule. google it and play around with the placement of the purse and seated guy and I think you’ll have a really nice cover.
like perhaps make the purse a bit smaller, and move it to the right, maybe turn the guy around and place him sorta behind it, facing the wave, or back to the wave, whichever you prefer. Do you have photoshop?
Yes, I did this in p.s. Thanks for the suggestions, I will try them out!
I like design #1 the best
My artistic skills were stunted at the preschool level, but I like #1 the best. Something about the angle of the design works better. Really NICE job, by the way. It’s a captivating collage and a memorable title. I would make the letters of the title a bit thicker so they are readable in a thumbnail, and it might just be me, but Heist doesn’t quite look centered below Invisible. GOOD LUCK!
I like all of them, but #2 is the one I would choose.
I like the first design best, too. Very you-ish. I will cherish holding your book of stories in my hands when that fine day comes. Xoxo
#1 is the one that works the best for me. I agree with Shine (not sure who this). Purse should shift. I would try slightly back and left. As for the the thinker, he does break the rule of leading your eye off the page with his orientation but maybe that’s ok since it’s a book cover and you want people to open it.
I like #2
